The Season of Advent
As we approach Christmas, Christians go through a period we call "Advent". This is a time of expectation, the waiting for the arrival of God's son Jesus. Each Sunday, we light a candle to represent a different facet of our wait.
The candle of Hope
The first candle is "The Candle of Hope". Hope provides us with the strength to continue moving forward. When someone loses hope, the desire to live fades. God has promised an eternal life with Him for those that confess their faith in Jesus. This promise is what gives us hope, no matter what is happening around us. We know the future has been promised to us, and nothing can take that away.
The candle of Peace
The second candle is "The Candle of Peace". Our relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, gives us a peace that surpasses all human understanding. During the absolute worst times, God can provide an "inner peace" that we cannot achieve on our own. While life might come crashing down around us, we remain unshaken because we receive our inner peace from God, who we believe is in control of everything.
The candle of Joy
The third candle is the “Candle of Joy”. Happiness comes from our circumstances. But joy, comes from an inner connection with God. No matter what the circumstance, good or bad, we can remain joyful through this connection. |
The candle of Love
The fourth candle is the "Candle of Love". One of the writers of the Bible wrote: "There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." We believe that Jesus died for us, so that we would live an eternal life with God. This was the greatest sacrifice, and the greatest act of love anyone could show us. |
The Christ Candle
We call the final candle the "Christ Candle". THIS is what the entire Christmas season is about. Come hear the story of that first Christmas, and why these candles carry so much meaning for Christians. |
